Independent Living Skills

Independent Living Skills (ILS) are any Activity of Daily Living (ADL) that an individual may need skill development to maintain or increase their independence. Examples of skills-building:

Time Management, Self-Advocacy, Basic Computer Skills, Internet Safety, Resume Writing, Interviewing Skills, use of Public Transit systems, Budgeting and Bill Pay, Completing and Understanding paperwork, and more.

Our ILS Specialist will work with you to identify the areas of your life that require these types of skills and design a plan to achieve personal success.

1-on-1

We offer 1-on-1 ILS appointments to better address personal goals developed by our members using person-centered planning. Our ILS Specialist conducts an introductory meeting to understand and help the member determine how to break the goal down into manageable steps in a timely fashion. Each appointment is a stepping-stone to achieving a new level of understanding and applying practical use of each life-skill.

Workshops

Our San Jose office holds workshops throughout the month. Some topics include necessary cooking skills, getting organized in your housing search, managing your caregiver, budgeting basics, and emergency and disaster preparedness.

We’ve partnered with local community centers, school districts, and shelters to bring these essential life skills to our local community. Topics include getting organized for your housing search, advocacy in the workplace, dress for success, vocational skills, internet safety, how to use your smart device, emergency preparedness, and more.
