Assistive technology (AT) is redefining what is possible for people with a wide range of disabilities. At home, work, school, and in the community, AT is enabling individuals with disabilities to be more independent, self-confident, and productive.
AT devices are mechanical aids which substitute for or enhance the function of some physical or mental ability that is impaired. AT can be anything homemade, purchased off the shelf, modified, or commercially available which is used to help an individual perform some task of daily living. AT devices can range from "low tech" things like adapted spoons and eye glasses to "high tech" items such as computers and voice-output readers.
